Taking In The Sights

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.
~St. Augustine

Spencer is coming to the end of a long and enjoyable Christmas break but it was definitely eventful. We decided to waste no time twiddling our thumbs. Instead we got out and took in the sights. We weren't able to get out of the car really simply because we don't have the money to do much but we wanted to at least see what amazing things we were surrounded by.
We headed to New York City first. We got lost a time or two but even enjoyed that. We also played a joke on my mom but I have to share some background information with you first for you to understand it. My family (everyone but my mom) refers to dachshunds as rat dogs. So... Spencer and I called my mom and with my most disgusted and voice of disbelief tone I told my mom that she would ever guess what climbed into our car. Of course she immediately said... "EWWW! A RAT!!!" I went along with it and said "Yeah! Can you believe that? And it looked just like Faith!" (Our dachshund) The crazy part... My mom bought it. She didn't even register what I had said and truly believed that a rat had tried to climb into the car. Once I burst her bubble, I got the "You're so mean! I am sorry Faithy, I love you and I will come save you." HAHAHA!!! I love my mother.
The next place we headed was to Boston. We walked around the outside of Fenway field and tried to locate the site of the Boston Tea Party but didn't stay long here because we had made plans to go to dinner with Spencer's best buddy here in Connecticut. Nevertheless, it was an amazing opportunity and we are looking forward to the next chance we have to go back.
The third place that we headed to was Newport, RI and boy did we love it there!  Down town Newport reminded us so much of down town Park City, specifically main street. We also drove 'Ocean Drive' which is a marked trail you drive along the coast. Out one side is the ocean while out the other are HUGE mansions. We stopped at the Eisenhower Home in Fort Adams and always drove past the Vanderbilt Home. We stopped at Applebees on the way home and Ethan watched the football game with daddy.
Our last stop during the break was back to New York but this time we took the train in. The train station is just a short 4 minute drive from our home and it takes us right into Grand Central Station. So we grabbed blankets for Ethan, his stroller, and some jackets for us. I got to see some of the beautiful holiday decorations before they were taken down and we got to see the famous New York ice rink, among other sites. Ethan was a hit on train ride back from the city. Everyone loved him, he was very smiley and giggly.
It has been amazing to get out and spend some time together and we are excited that we have found a few places we would like to go back to with family and friends. I am also looking forward to finding a job that would offer an income allowing us to get out of the car and experience these places with a more hands on approach.

We wish you a...

MERRY CHRISTMAS

As I have said in my previous Christmas posts this is by far my favorite holiday and this Christmas holds an even more special place in my heart because it is Ethan's FIRST Christmas. With a growing family we are beginning to create our own traditions and memories.

The first of these memories is to wish you a merry Christmas from afar! Yep, that's right! We didn't make the trip back to Utah for the holidays. We opted to stay in Connecticut and celebrate with just us three and the puppies.

Another memory is our Christmas tree. Spencer and I have NEVER had a Christmas tree of our own since being married. We borrowed Brandon's last year because we were celebrating Christmas at our house to announce the coming of Ethan and Spencer's acceptance to school. So this year one of Spencer's classmates' offered us a live tree from her family tree nursery. It was such an amazing experience. We drove up to her parent's home where they served us a delicious lunch after taking us and two other classmates' families out on the tractor to pick our trees. Once we found the tree that we wanted Candice's (the generous classmate) father chopped the trees down. After lunch, all of the husband went out to the cars with Candice's father and tied the trees to the top of the cars for the ride home.

Among other traditions and memories Spencer cooked an amazing Christmas dinner and even with the distance Ethan was anything but short of being spoiled. Thank you to everyone that helped in blessing Ethan and making this Christmas a Christmas for the books full of amazing memories.
